First I straighten the unfinished edges of the fabric and then lay it out to see the pattern design. With this pattern I am looking for what flower I think is the most interesting. I will look for pattern detail, the direction of the flower, colors that are in it, and what is around it.
I decided that I like this flower the best so I will center it in the middle of each pillow. Here is why I chose it:
I laid an 18x18 pillow form under the fabric to see what it would like with different flowers centered in the middle. I didn't like the above lay out because it formed a "triangle" in the center with the two larger flowers on the bottom and the smaller one on top.
Although this flower was one of my favorites I didn't like it centered because the four larger flowers formed a "square".
After several other options I finally decided upon this one. I like the movement of the fabric here. Do you notice the way the smaller flowers and leaves are going in different directions? I also like the colors that show up in this lay out. It is hard to tell from the picture but there are greens and reds in it.Now I will find the center of my main flower and center that in the piece that I will be cutting for the 18x18 pillow so it will be the exact center of my pillow.
I would NEVER have considered that! I just learned something new!!! This is why I love blogging. Thanks Karen!
